Broodmares
Springpferdezuchtverband Oldenburg-International places great value on two things: an open, purely quality oriented breeding policy and a very good mare base. "The success that Oldenburg-International has already been able to achieve in its short existence depended to a high degree on the high quality of the mares used for breeding", explains the OS Breeding Director, Dr. Wolfgang Schulze-Schleppinghoff. Type, jumping ability and quality of movement, willingness to perform and correct conformation are what distinguish OS mares.
Important here is a clear orientation to breeding specialists. The Verband will not make any progress by breeding an "all-round horse". As far as performance criteria such as rideability, elasticity and soundness are concerned, there is, of course, common ground between dressage horses and show jumpers – but with the essential difference that a dressage horse does not need to jump. When it comes to claiming jumping quality, Oldenburg-International clearly sees itself as a special breed – with its own guidelines for breeding which, for example, allow the use of trotters in breeding. What initially sounds rather exotic turns out upon close examination to be a possibility to enhance traits in the breed such as mechanical function and robustness. A look in the annals of show jumping sport also proves that there have been more than just a few outstanding jumpers that turn out to be half trotter when you look at their pedigree. And opposite general opinion, a positive influence on this breed through the use of Thoroughbred is not nearly as measurable.
