The licensing is the decision of the Verband with regard to the provisional use of a stallion within the scope of the breeding program. The characteristics of the external appearance as well as the predisposition of the performance are part of the decision.
The licensing must be applied for at the administrative office.
The following conditions must be fulfilled in order that a stallion can get the permission for the licensing:

• the minimum age is 2 years
• previous permission at a preselection date if for the respective licensing a preselection date is held,
• the pedigree must correspond to the conditions for a registration into the stallions stud-book I (4 generations of approved pedigree, the mother must be registered into the highest section of the mare stud-book I),
• the horse passport must be on hand.

The preselection for the main licensing for all stallions is normally beginning of October in Vechta. At the preselection the stallions are judged first of all in the free-jumping. Following that it will be decided if the stallions shall be shown again on the pavement (pace and trot on hand). Thereafter the stallions are judged on the pace ring. Now the decision regarding a permission for the licensing is made.

The main licensing in Vechta takes place at the last weekend in November. Here all permitted stallions are presented again to the approval commission. The presentation of the stallions is made at first on hand on the pavement. Following this the stallions are shown in the free run and free-jumping as well as again in trot on hand. The best licensed stallions are awarded as premium stallions and a winning stallion is nominated.
